Optimise your Google My Business profile for your business so potential customers can find you through search engines.
In this article, we've outlined basic guidelines, but if you need further guidance, just say Yes, I want more customers and our team will assist you.
Optimise business information
1. Go to Google My Business and click "Manage now".
2. Sign in to the Google account you use to manage this business.
3. Click the pencil icon next to the business you want to optimize.
4. In the menu on the left, click "Info".
5. Make sure the business name is spelled correctly. Update it if necessary.
6. Click on the edit business category icon.
- Choose the main category that best describes your business. If you're not sure what to choose, Google your main competitors and see what their main category is.
- If you offer other services or products that don't fall into the main category, you can include them as an additional category, but don't try to fill your Google My Business profile with unrelated additional categories. Choose only those that are highly relevant to your business. Choosing irrelevant categories can lead to a high bounce rate, which can hurt your results.
7. Make sure the business address is spelled correctly. Update it if necessary.
8. Then edit the business hours.
Choose the days your business is open and enter the specific opening and closing times.
9. Add a phone number where customers can contact your business.
If necessary, you can add multiple phone numbers to your Google My Business account.
10. Make sure the URL of the business website is spelled correctly. Update it if necessary.
11. Add the services offered at this location.
- Services are specific to the business categories you have previously selected for your business. If you have selected more than one category, you will be able to add relevant services for each category separately.
- For some categories, Google will provide pre-defined services for you to choose from.
- In other categories where Google doesn't provide predefined services, or if you want to add a service that isn't listed, you can add your own services.
- [Optional] Once you have selected your services, you can add pricing information and descriptions to each.
12. Then edit the attributes section.
In this section, add relevant details about accessibility, amenities, highlights, payment options, scheduling, and service options. Choose only options that accurately reflect the reality of your business. For these options, Google will regularly poll people who visit your location to verify that the information is accurate.
13. An important element of Google My Business profile optimization is adding photos.
- The recommended dimensions for all Google My Business images are 720px wide by 720px tall (except for the cover, which is 1024 x 576), between 10 KB and 5 MB, and in JPG or PNG formats.
- Logo: this is the image that will be used when posting updates or answering questions or reviews.
- Cover: this is one of the most important photos because it will be visible on your business page, in search results and on Google Maps.
- Product: include pictures of the products sold in your store.
- Interior: if relevant, you can include photos of your business interior (this is usually a great addition for businesses like restaurants, bars, cafes, coworking spaces, etc.).
- Exterior: if Google already has Street View images of the area where your business is located, this image will already be available. This helps users find or identify your business when they are nearby.
- Other: you can also add other types of assets such as videos or photos of your team showing your work.
14. Manage reviews.
The first time you optimize your new Google My Business profile, you'll need to try to respond to any unanswered reviews the business has (if any). Once this first round of replies is complete, it's recommended that you reply to new reviews as they come in (see the Manage Settings section of Google My Business to set up notifications for new reviews).
- In your Google My Business dashboard, click on "Reviews" in the menu on the left.
- Click on "Unanswered".
- Reply to all recent reviews.
It is especially important to respond to negative reviews. Do not try to argue with the user. Instead, provide a response that would be satisfactory to another person who is looking at your business profile and reviewing the 1- and 2-star reviews - these are the people you're really writing for.
